MINI Cooper Oil Filter Warning

This information is for the owners of the normal Coopers, not the "S" models. Symptoms are oil pressure light indicates "LOW" oil pressure after a filter and oil change. When performing an oil change, or having your local mechanic perform that duty, make sure you or he is aware of the following. The Cooper oil filter cartridge slips over a perforated center core attached to the inside of the oil filter cap. The core is spring-loaded and applies some preload pressure to seal the filter against the filter base. We have had several do-it-your-self mechanics call us in a panic after performing a simple oil and filter change. What has occurred is when removing and discarding the filter cartridge they have inadvertently discarded the center-sealing core. The result is low oil pressure at idle that will damage your engine if not corrected immediately.
